APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Canadian Border Outfitters hires about 20 seasonal, full and part-time employees for the summer. If you would like to be considered for a position with CBO, please follow the steps outlined below.

1. Fill out the CBO Job Application pages below.

2. Prepare a resume.

3. Please send a current photo of yourself (if you have one) with your application; however this is not mandatory.

Applications will be processed as they are received. Hiring decisions for summer employment are usually made by the end of April.

The hiring process involves an interview in person or over the phone and a request for references. If a position is offered, you will be notified by phone or letter. You will need to indicate to CBO that you ARE or ARE NOT going to accept the offer within 3 business days.

On the job training will be provided.

There are more applications for employment with CBO than there are available positions. There is no assurance that every applicant will receive a job with CBO.

JOB DUTIES

The following summary gives a list of job duties. We have several different positions available at CBO.

Pre-package food; pack fresh and freeze-dried food into food packs according to customer menu selections; order perishables; process deliveries (food packs weigh about 50#). Prepare, cook, and serve food/three meals per day; clear tables, wash dishes; assist with ordering needs. Daily cleaning of motel rooms, bunkhouse, yurts, shower houses, bathrooms; make beds; clean restaurant eating area and store; bag linens for laundry; replenish linen store room. Handle cash register in CBO’s Cookshack and Gift Shop, keep store displays neat and orderly. Load/unload canoes on and off tow boats and vans; load/unload gear and packs; drive customers and gear to/from entry points; check in packs and gear; clean packs and gear; canoe repair; yard maintenance. Vehicle and towboat drivers must have a clean driving record and be willing to submit to random drug testing (canoes and packs weigh about 75#). Clean, sort, inspect and repair gear (tents, sleeping bags, stoves, cook kits, etc.) pack gear into packs. Restock packhouse shelves Daily maintenance and cleaning of bathrooms, restaurant, work area and staff facilities.

You must be willing to try to perform any/all of the above tasks. Training is provided

ORIENTATION/TRAINING On your first day on the job you will receive an orientation, meet the rest of the crew, and begin with on-the-job training. It's our goal to help you get up to speed with your job responsibilities as quickly as possible. Nothing feels better than for you to know that you are doing a good job and making a difference.

DRESS CODE We are a service business and require our employees to appear for work clean, groomed and dressed neatly. CBO provides a staff shirt that is worn whenever you are on the job.

LODGING/MEALS There are limited lodging accommodations available for employees at CBO. CBO’s lodging is alcohol and tobacco free. Most employees rent rooms/apartments in the Ely area and commute to Moose Lake (18 miles east of Ely). We can provide information about where to get rental leads. We do not make arrangements for employee lodging off the CBO base. Meals are available to all employees at discounted rates.

PERKS There are many benefits that go with summer employment in the Northwoods. Perhaps working just a few miles from the BWCAW and Quetico Park is enough for you. The air is clear, the lakes deep, fishing is excellent, hiking trails are well marked and wildlife is abundant.

There are several specific things we'd like you to know about the benefits of working at CBO.

Your job at CBO is very important to the overall operation of the business. Each employee will be learning new skills and have an opportunity to provide outstanding performance on their job. Employees receive training that can also be useful in future jobs with other employers. Working at CBO gives you an opportunity to enhance the accomplishments you can put on your resume. CBO allows employees to use (with permission) canoes and camping equipment at no cost. When you have a day off, it can be fun to get out on the water just like our customers do! Swimming right off our dock is a popular activity after a busy and sometimes hot day. Fishing from the dock or on the lake also offers some quiet relaxation. There is an employee discount on merchandise from our store. Someone from CBO does a town run every couple of days and will get your mail to and from the Post Office CBO is just 18 miles east of Ely. Good pizza is just 25 minutes away! Information about the Ely area is available from the Ely Chamber of Commerce, 1600 East Sheridan, Ely, MN 55731. During your stay in Ely you can take advantage of the numerous scenic and recreational opportunities available on your time off.

Seasonal Positions Available at Canadian Border Outfitters

Our “Season” runs from April 15th through October 15th. Our “peak” times are from mid-June through mid-August. At the time of your interview, we will need to know your available start date and ending date of employment.

We have a list of lodging available in the Ely area that will be sent to you upon confirmation of your employment here. Limited onsite lodging is also available for employees starting in May and working through September. Our staff lodging is tobacco and alcohol free.
