Declines to act on suit by locals to overturn snowmobile ban instituted by Secretary of Agriculture.

Mar. 1977, Courts
Supreme Court refuses to hear appeal on logging suit thus opening up BWCA for March logging again. (Refer 1975)

1977, Congress
Fraser and Oberstar both reintroduce their bills (modified somewhat from their 1976 bills). Bills are referred to House Interior Committee and National Parks Sub Committee.

1977, Locals
Form "Boundary Waters Conservation Alliance" to promote multiple uses of BWCA.

1977, Congress
Holds Hearings on BWCA issue in St. Paul and in Ely. Ely citizens park loaded logging trucks near hearing room and hang Heinselman in effigy nearby.

July 1977, Locals
Representatives of timber industry tour state urging logging in BWCA and citing economic disaster if ban continues.

August 1977, Citizens
Minnesota Poll reveals majority of state citizens favor full wilderness BWCA.

Sept. 1977, Congress
Holds hearings in Washington D.C. Locals and conservationists offer conflicting testimony. (Majority of time given to locals)

Sept. 1977, Congress
Senator Anderson declares he favors banning logging and mining but favors allowing "some" motor use in BWCA.

Sept. 1977, State
Governor Perpich supports BWCA logging ban in House Subcommittee hearing.  Pledges state aid for industry.

Sept. 1977, Sec. of Ag.
Bergland states administration favors enlarging BWCA, banning logging and mining-and limiting motors to five major lakes.
